Peridot is a lovely green coloured gemstone which derives its name from the French word ‘peritot’ which means ‘unclear’, or it could also be named from the Arabic word ‘faridat’ which means ‘gem’. It is one of the oldest known gemstone and can be found in Egyptian jewellery from the early 2nd millennium B.C. It has a hardness of 6.5-7 on the Moh’s scale.
Myanmar (Burma), Pakistan, and the United States are the recent sources of this gemstone.
