Iolite is derived from the Greek word 'Ios', which means violet. Iolite is also known by the names Cordierite, Dichroite and Water sapphire. The other names are derived from the French mineralogist, Cordier; and from its similarity to Sapphire.
The most desirable colour is a rich violet-blue and is gaining popularity for its beauty and attractive affordability. It is commonly cut into traditional shapes.
Seafaring Vikings used this stone to filter the haze and glare from their eyes. The power of Iolite aided these fearless warriors in navigating the vast oceans upon which they sailed.
